About ASOAB

By using three primary art disciplines (music, visual and performing) in an innovative way, Artistically Speaking Out Against Bullying is creating a program for children and youth who are negatively impacted by bullying. Creating a safe environment encourages participants to learn self acceptance, self discipline and self respect empowering them to make better life choices not only as individuals but as part of their communities as well.

HELLO, MY NAME IS MELANIE SCHAMBACH. I RECENTLY MOVED TO LONDON ONTARIO AFTER SPENDING A DECADE IN VANCOUVER BC. I AM PASSIONATE ABOUT CREATING INCLUSIVE SPACES FOR FOLKS TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES, AS WELL AS COLLABORATIVELY CREATING ART IN PUBLIC SPACES TO RAISE AWARENESS ON SOCIAL ISSUES.
I AM CONTACTING YOU BECAUSE I AM CONSIDERING DOING A YOUTH PROJECT WHILE I AM HERE IN LONDON. I AM INTERESTED IN PLACING THE QUESTION: HOW IS YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO BELONGING? AND ALSO LOOKING BACK AT SOME OF THE HISTORIES OF MIGRATION OF PEOPLES AND CULTURES TO THIS LAND HERE. I PLAN TO INVITE DIFFERENT YOUTH GROUPS TO CREATE AND PRODUCE A GIANT MURAL THAT SPEAKS TO THESE STORIES. I AM WONDERING IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO MEET WITH ME AND LOOK INTO THE POSSIBILITIES OF PARTNERING TOGETHER.
I HAVE DONE MANY PROJECTS LIKE THIS. HERE’S A CLOSE EXAMPLE OF A PROJECT I DID IN 2012 CALLED ‘THE BELONGING ACTION.’

      Hi Melanie,

My name is Phoebe and I’m currently moving to London from Berlin, Germany. I stumbled over your post, when I was looking for opportunities to work with children and youth in London on a voluntary basis. Interestingly, the international buddhist summer camp, that I’m part of staffing and organizing every year, has the same theme this year as your project: “belonging”. I’m not particularly surprised, since this seems to be one of our biggest challenges and opportunities world-wide right now, espiecially with the Syrian refugee crisis being more real than ever.
My background is in theatre studies (just finished my BA) and mindfulness meditation and I’m trying to shift my career towards education right now. I’m also interested in sustainability and how we can communaly create societal change through culture and art in general.
I can’t offer you a youth group and I don’t know if you are looking for support on an organizational/facilitator level at all, but I’d be really interested in being a part of this project in some way.

Please let me know what you think!
      Yours,
      Phoebe
